Learn the art and science behind Green Mansion terrariums from Nancy Morrow, and leave the class with your own new little green friend.  Rare opportunity for a terrarium workshop with the Memphis Plant Lady in Germantown – space is limited, so reserve your space now.  I’ll bring a variety of mosses and rare miniature tropicals I’ve been growing specially for these workshops, along with everything you need to plant a 10 inch bubble bowl terrarium that will thrive for many years.

Workshops with Mom make a great present, just in time for Mother’s Day!  Or give me a call at 901-828-3685 if you want to come by my studio this weekend for one of my special creations.

Sign up for classes here:  Terrarium Workshops Signup

Check out some of the terries available for purchase here:  Moms Love Terrariums! Take a Look and Give Me a Call

You can also schedule a workshop here at my studio in Midtown for 1-3 people.  Or maybe you want to learn more about gardening?  I am available for on site consulting to teach you how to pick the right plants for your environment, help you make a plan, teach you how to prepare the soil and put the plants in the ground; I can take you shopping, too, if you want the whole Megillah!  Consults are $60 for first hour, $45 each additional hour, minimum of two hour per session; mileage for any trip outside the 240 loop.

Have a great weekend, get out and see some art, listen to some music, or share a smile with a stranger, it feels good.

Terrarium in Upcoming Crosstown Arts Exhibit

I have a terrarium in the upcoming exhibit, Homeward Bound, opening Friday December 14, 2018, at  Crosstown Arts, reception 6-8 pm

You can read more about the exhibit here: Homeward Bound

Although all terries are homes, the piece I submitted is a memory of an imaginary home I’ve visited many times since I was a lonely kid with my nose in a book.  “Mermaid’s Cove “ was almost like a nightclub  in JM Barrie’s Peter Pan, where Peter would go play with the flirtatious sea maidens, leaving Wendy at home  to feed the Lost Boys and get them to bed.

This is a young terrarium, still in its first growth; it will need careful trimming to maintain the design over the years.  This is the piece which I planted this summer on The Family Plot television show.  You can view the segment here Nancy Builds a Terry on The Family Plot

About six weeks after planting, I began shaping the terrain and adding details

Here she is in mid-September, three months old. You will see how much more she has grown by December, and will need to be trimmed by the end of the exhibit.

If you want to learn more about these fascinating creations or get one of your own, you can send me an email or call 901-828-3685.    Come to my Open House Show and Sale on Sunday December 16 from noon to four p.m., too, at 700 North Belvedere in Midtown.

Call 901-828-3685 for more information or send a message below.

Carnivorous Sundew plants and tillandsia bulbs, fossils and mosses all add up to a landscape from another planet!

Here’s my first attempt at an artist’s bio:

Plants are sentient, mysterious creatures from another kingdom, who will communicate with us if we can be still and pay attention. Building these Green Mansions is a long process, akin to writing poetry, I think. The colors and textures, as well as growth habits and tendencies of the plants are the palette with which I can construct the bones of a design to grow and change for years to come. I propagate many of the plants I use which gives me the time to get to know them individually, and imagine the container and companions that would be best with them.

The terrariums on exhibit range in age from 2 months to 4 years. They are similar to bonsai, with the plants kept in check with careful trimming. Some of the plants are miniature or very slow growing, needing no trimming. Others can be aggressive, resulting in a design that will be much more fluid over the years as the plants compete for resources and are shaped by my hand. You can see more about this on my website, or give me a call.

I open my studio to teach people about the art and science of building and maintaining terrariums, kokedama, and bonsai. In addition, I consult with people who want to learn about house plants and gardening in their own homes or offices, usually in half day sessions, and enjoy sharing my love for our green companions with people who have never considered or understood how to appreciate their beauty and life force. My students learn basic considerations for selecting plants for a particular space, and technical skills on handling, transplanting, watering, etc. which, once learned, open up the world of plants for most people to explore and enjoy.
